Eye Opener

Hey all,
So, today my class visited Pfizer, an animal research facility. I always thought I would never be interested in doing anything that involved testing on lab animals. Since I began my Lab Animal Class I've learned how much we as humans owe to lab animals. Even though people buy products which state "not tested on animals" they really are. The only thing not tested on animals is the final product. Products who make this claim have also all benefited from animal research. The base of their products was made via animal testing. Furthermore, the FDA demands (by law) that any new or newly formulated product be tested on at least two species of animals before clinical tests begin on human subjects. I know people are sooo against this, but ask yourself these questions HONESTLY:

1. Have you ever taken Advil or Tylenol?
2. Do you use lotion, creams, shampoos, etc...?
3. Have you benefited from drugs during surgery, childbirth, antibiotics, or simple everyday prescriptions?

Even the overzealous PETA members can't say that they don't use products which have been tested on animals. In fact, today I learned that the president of PETA (I forgot her name) is an insulin dependant diabetic. How was insulin created? You guessed it, through animal testing. She is able to live every day because a lab animal research.
I know not everyone is not going to agree with me, and that's okay, but I just wanted to make everyone think and appreciate where all our products come from and who we owe it all to.
If anyone has any arguments or counterpoints I welcome them!

Erica, you make a good point. The PETA pres. has a job, the basis of her rationale is the animals. I'm sure Peta did a few things to stop animal abuse, but it's become a political cause.
Ignorance can be a driving force for political causes, they have hidden agenda's and are self serving. The followers tend to be people who want to believe what they are told without checking the facts for themselves.

I'm sure there were abuses on animals in the past, as well as present and future. However PETA started as a well serving entity that has grown into a huge animal of it's own w/o checks and balances. Like many other entities and organizations; what started as a good thing grew into a monster of self serving rationalizing political action committees. Nice comment Erica. P.S. Anyone ever look at how rodeos get the animals to buck? Old Man in the NW

Interesting...I am not surprised.
AND, I have to agree with the old man in the NW comment about the rodeo. Let's chat about abuse... yea.

Sorry, we abused Lilu by putting her in the pool...I look at it as a swimming lesson...a life's lesson...she did great :)
